What is Voice SIM? Complete Guide | Smiles Connect

Data hacks

Choosing the right SIM plan can be overwhelming with so many options available. In this guide, we aim to clear up the difference between two major SIM plans: Voice SIM and Data SIM. Before we get started, here are some words related to this topic in Japanese.

  • What is Voice SIM? > Voice SIMとは? (Voice SIM to wa?)
  • What is Data SIM? > データSIMとは?(de-ta SIM to wa?)
  • Data SIM recommendation > データSIM おすすめ (de-ta SIM osusume)
  • Data SIM phone number > データSIM 電話番号 (de-ta SIM denwa bango)

What is Voice SIM?

Voice SIM is a type of SIM plan that allows customers to have a phone number to call and access internet data.

If you purchase a 3GB Voice SIM plan, the plan will include a calling function with a phone number and a 3GB internet data allowance. When you surpass the 3GB internet data allowance, most companies, including Smiles Connect, provide the option to add more data or continue using data connection at a slow speed. The usage of chat apps, such as LINE, WhatsApp, Messenger, etc, will count towards data since the service is provided through the Internet. In contrast, calling (through your phone number) will be charged separately on top of the price plan.

What is the difference between Data SIM and Voice SIM?

Data SIMs, on the other hand, typically provide internet data without a fully working phone number or calling capabilities. However, each Data SIM at Smiles Connect has a phone number that allows customers to receive SMS for free. In contrast, Voice SIMs usually include both a phone number for calls, SMS, and data connectivity.

Voice SIM at Smiles Connect

At Smiles Connect, the Voice SIM plan provides a combination of internet data connection and a calling function with a phone number. The service offers the following plans:

  • 3GB: least data at an affordable rate
  • 10GB: mid-range data option with mid-range price
  • 30GB: highest data allowance and available at premium pricing

However, as mentioned before, the calling function is charged separately. So, if use your phone number to call the city hall or customer service for a company, as a couple of examples, you will be charged the default rate of 22 yen per 30 seconds.

To avoid getting charged for every call and get other features, customers can opt for various add-ons

  • Unlimited calling plans (domestic): Options for unlimited calls within specific durations (5 minutes or 10 minutes)
  • No unlimited calling plan or calls over the set duration for a selected unlimited calling plan will result in using the default rating
    • default calling rate: 22 yen / 30 sec
    • SMS (domestic): From 3 yen/message
  • Voicemail feature
  • Call Waiting feature
